How to Fix Svchost.exe Errors
When Windows Update runs before your computer is shut off it can cause the error svchost.exe to occur. What does this look like? When you employ Windows XP Pro with a password that was set up for the administrator's main account, you might see the svchost.exe error message. Or you might see it when you attempt to start up your computer and get to the user login page. You might even see it when you start the computer up in "Safe Mode."
When you experience this error, the only thing it will let you do is select "Terminate the Program", "Ok" or "Cancel." This can be terribly frustrating, especially if you don't know why it's happening or how to fix it.
If you were to search around your computer a little, you would discover that the error is due to a damaged Windows Update. Now, how do you fix it? Follow the directions below:
Step One: Delete the Tainted Windows Update Files
- Select the Start menu and choose "Run."
- A test box will appear. Type CMD into the box and then hit "Enter."
- You will receive a command prompt. Type: net stop WuAuServ and then hit "Enter" again.
- Next, type cd %windir% and once again press the "Enter" key.
- A folder will open. Type in ren SoftwareDistribution SD_OLD and then press "Enter" to change the name of the SoftwareDistribution Folder
- Next type in net start WuAuServ in order to reboot the Windows Update service.
- Finally, type exit and then press "Enter" one more time to close the command prompt.
Step Two: Verify the Windows Update Service Settings
- Select the "Start" menu and choose "Run."
- A text box will appear. Type services.msc into the box and then hit "Ok."
- Select the Automatic Updates service.
- Select the "Log On" tab then check off the "Local System Account" to be the login account. Next, make sure that there is no check mark in the box beside "Allow Service to Interact with Desktop."
- On the "Log On" tab you will see the "Hardware Profile". Verify this service and ensure that it is enabled.
- Select the "General" tab. The startup type needs to be listed as automatic.
- While still in the "General" tab, select the "Service Status." This should be started – click on the Start button to enable it.
- Once you are finished, complete the steps as they are listed above for a second time.
Step Three: Windows Update DLLs (Dynamic-Link Library) needs to be Re-Registered
- Select the "Start" menu and choose "Run."
- A text box will appear. Type CMD into the box and then hit "Ok."
- A black command window will appear. Type REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL into the command window and then press "Enter."
- When you see the message that the DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL has succeeded then you can press "Ok."
- Complete the last two steps for every following commands: REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL, REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL, REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL, REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL, REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL, REGSVR32 ATL.DLL and REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
Once you have completed the above directions, reboot your computer. This will reset the computer's configurations. Now you're done!
