Surf the Web Faster: How to Speed Up Your Internet Connection
Surfing the web can be incredibly frustrating if your Internet is slow and the pages take forever to load. By making a few adjustments to your computer's settings, you won't have to deal with a slow Internet connection. The following instructions are based on a PC with a broadband connection.
How to speed up your Internet:
- Before you make any changes, it's important to determine the speed of your Internet connection. There are several websites that will test your Internet speed for free. Each time you test your Internet speed, the results will be different. This is expected. The important thing is that the results are all in the same vicinity.
- Once you have determined the speed of your Internet connection you can start to increase it. Select the "Start" menu and click on "Control Panel."
- In the Control Panel, select "Internet Options" then "Connections" and then "LAN Settings."
- If any of the boxes have been selected you will have to uncheck them all. Then click on "OK" and exit the Control Panel. It's that easy!
There are other alternatives, of course. You can download the tools that affect the Internet connection. Look for tools that can mimic or recreate the Windows Socket. To boost the speed of your default Internet connection, download and install these on your computer.
Another alternative is tweaking the Reserved Bandwidth that is run by your computer's operating system:
- Select the "Start" menu and click on "Run."
- A box will appear: you should type "gpedit.msc" and then hit "OK." The Group Policy window will appear. Select the "Computer Configuration" and then "Administrative Templates."
- Select the "Network" and then choose the Qos Packet Scheduler so that you can modify "Limit Reservable Bandwidth." Select "Enable" and make the default value "zero."
- Press "Apply" and then "OK" and these adjustments should then be activated.
- Done!
And finally, you can modify some of the values associated with Internet Explorer and this will help to speed up your Internet:
- Select the "Start" menu and then "Run." When the text box appears, type "regedit" and then hit "OK."
- In the Editor window select "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and expand it by clicking on the arrow beside it. Select the "Microsoft" folder and then choose "Windows". Click on "Current Version" and then select "Internet settings."
- Increase the values for "MaxConnectionsPerServer keys" and "MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server and MA." Select a greater value than what appears, as this will allow you to browse each page's available connections.
- Exit all windows and launch your web browser. Re-visit the website that you used to initially test the speed of your Internet. Re-test the connection speed to determine if there was an increase.
