Learn How to Make Windows Load More Efficiently

Most computers automatically launch several programs applications at startup. This means that before you get to open any files or run any applications, you have to wait patiently for your computer to load all its automatically configured settings. This can be really frustrating because as your computer becomes bogged down with information it can take even longer for it to load. Most of the time you're not even aware of all the programs that load automatically. Fortunately, there are several ways that you can decrease the load time of your Windows operating system. Prior to making any modifications, save and exit any and all programs that you are currently running.

Make Windows Load More Efficiently

  1. Open the "Start" menu and click on "Run"
  2. A text box will appear. Type "msconfig" and then hit "Enter"
  3. Locate the box called "Timeout:". Under the "BOOT.INI" tab you will see a value. It should be 30. This means that your system will wait for 30 seconds before it starts up. You can adjust the boot time to anything you like, for example 2 or 3.
  4. Run "scandisk" and "disk defragmentation." These system scans will tell you if your computer is optimized and, if not, it will help your computer start more quickly and perform better.
  5. Make sure to remove temporary files from your computer as this will assist Windows when it's starting up. Open the Start menu and then select "Run." Type "%Temp%" into the text box. A folder will appear that contains several files. Select "Edit" and then click on "Select All." Hit "File" and then "Delete."

Once you finish the above instructions put the computer into "hibernate." This usually allows the computer to load Windows more quickly. Here's how to hibernate your computer:

  1. Open the Start menu and then select the "Control Panel."
  2. Select "Power Options" and then "Hibernate."
  3. Click on "Enable Hibernate."
  4. You can also send the computer into hibernate just by hitting the power button. To activate this select the "Advanced" tab and adjust the configurations for the "Power buttons." Another easy way to do this is to hold down the shift key when you turn your system's power off.
  5. You need to fully shut the computer down at least once a week in order to restore the system.

Another alternative to get Windows to start faster is to remove files from the Prefetch folder. Here's how:

  1. Open up C:\Windows\prefetch.
  2. Delete all the files located in this folder.
  3. If you want to completely remove files you have to open "regedit" and adjust the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Control\ Session Manager\ Memory Management\ PrefetchParameters. The registry key has a value called "EnablePrefetcher." The 'EnablePrefetcher' value has four values of its own:

    • 0: Disabled – This will turn the Prefetch system off.
    • 1: Application – Prefetch will cache your applications.
    • 2: Boot – Prefetch will cache boot your computer's files.
    • 3: All – Prefetch will cache both application and boot files.

  4. Select the second option (the "Boot" option) as this will avoid crashing your computer. Now restart your computer.
