How to Detect and Remove Hidden Viruses

A constant concern for many computer owners is the issue of viruses. It's hard to completely protect your computer from viruses and when you get one it can be hard to find and eliminate. Viruses infect your files, negatively alter your software and can turn your computer against you. With files and files full of personal and sensitive information, a virus can be a very dangerous thing.

One of the most frustrating and dangerous viruses is the Trojan Virus. While you can utilize many effective anti-virus software programs, these often fail to detect the Trojan virus. It's a very clever virus that is specifically designed to deceive your anti-virus software.

First, it usually enters your computer through an email attachment and then it heads for your hard drive. Once it's in your computer the Trojan virus actually tries to remain undetected for a while. It will very slowly begin to alter your computer's operating system and delete programs and files. While the Trojan virus can do significant damage to your computer, it's actually quite easy to remove.

There are different versions of the Trojan virus but they all follow a basic pattern. To establish a base camp of sorts, they insert themselves into the Windows Database (a large database that keeps track of all your PC's hardware, software, settings and user profiles) by adding a line in the run utilities. They can also insert a line into the Start Menu. This is like their main office. To remove the virus, you need to remove this line from the database and reboot. This will stop the virus from launching.

Things get complicated if the virus has already altered or deleted a file. You have to remove the virus carefully and it might be best to consult a specialist at this point. You can also successfully remove it with automated tools or software but the bottom line is to act cautiously.

Removing the Trojan virus:

  • If you think that your computer has a virus or, more specifically, the Trojan virus, you should check your hard drive.
  • You must detect where the virus starts (the Windows Database or the Start menu, for example) so that you know where to remove it from.
  • Before you start to remove the virus, make a backup of any important files.
  • Once you know where the virus is located, remove the line and reboot your computer. When your computer restarts you will know exactly where to look to remove the virus.
  • You can remove the virus manually or you can download anti-virus software that is designed to find and eliminate the Trojan virus. If you decide to download software, make sure that you find a credible website.
